"In 1974, the Simsbury, Connecticut high school sponsored a trip to see Moscow and St. Petersburg (Leningrad). We took off from JFK in New York City and flew to Moscow via Orly Airport in Paris. However, there was fog in Moscow and we were diverted to Kiev. The next day we flew into Moscow and began our trip. From trading gum for pins and seeing an entirely different culture, it was the age of detente and we had a great time."
